Because I want to run autotools in the same environment that I build the
package in (debian sid) which is different from the environment that I
fetch and edit the source (ubuntu). This way it's more reproducible if I
need to edit some autotools input files.

Although it does mean that the debian package gets a little different
from what people would get when they used a tarball created by make
dist... I guess I need to think it over and see what changes my
development environment/process would require if I wanted to switch to
using "make dist"...
